Antihypertensive Therapy
نویسنده
چکیده
Effective antihypertonsive drug therapy began with the ganglion-blocking agents, followed by reserpine and hydralarine. later advances included the benzothiadiazine saluretic agents and more recently compounds which specifically inhibit the sympathetic nervous system, such as guanethidine, alpha-methyldopa, and certain amine oxidase inhibitors. Among the antihypertensive drugs, molecular modifications seem to have yielded the greatest clinical beneQts in the period immediately following the discovery of an agent with a new type of action. Further improvements have been limited because of inability to circumvent objectionable side effects which were indissolubly linked with the mode of antihypertensive action of a given class of compounds.

Male infertility during antihypertensive therapy: are we addressing correctly the problem?
Male fertility significantly decreased in the last 50 years, as showed in several studies reporting a reduction of sperm counts per ml in the seminal fluid. Several “acute” pharmacological treatments, as antibiotics, could cause subclinical and temporary reduction of male fertility; conversely, long-term medical treatment may severely affect male fertility, although this effect could be conside...

Background: This study was conducted because up to now,the investigations performed on cutaneous manifestations ofantihypertensive agents’ reactions, especially in Pakistan, arenegligible even though these drugs are taken by a large numberof people. The aim of this study was to determine the cutaneousmanifestations of different antihypertensive agents in terms ofdosage and duration.Method: The ...
متن کاملHypertension and its treatment in the NINDS rt-PA Stroke Trial.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We examined the frequency, course, and treatment of hypertension in the NINDS rt-PA Stroke Trial. METHODS Blood pressure (BP) was measured at the time of admission, at randomization, and then 36 times during the first 24 hours after randomization. Patients with a systolic BP of >185 mm Hg and a diastolic BP of >110 mm Hg at admission were defined as hypertensive before ...
متن کاملPersistence and adherence to antihypertensive treatment in relation to initial prescription: diuretics versus other classes of antihypertensive drugs.
BACKGROUND The use of thiazide diuretics in the treatment of hypertension is widely considered as a first-line treatment, given the efficacy and low cost of this class of drugs. This indication is not unanimous, because thiazides can cause metabolic alterations, and other side effects that reduce compliance and persistence on treatment. OBJECTIVES In a multicentre, open-label randomized study...
متن کاملInfluence of dietary modifications on the blood pressure response to antihypertensive medication.
Identifying dietary modifications that potentiate the blood pressure (BP)-lowering effects of antihypertensive medications and that are practical for free-living people may assist in achieving BP reduction goals. We assessed whether two dietary patterns were effective in lowering BP in persons on antihypertensive therapy and in those not on therapy. Ninety-four participants (38/56 females/males...
متن کاملAntihypertensive pharmacogenetics: getting the right drug into the right patient.
Pharmacogenetic investigation seeks to identify genetic factors that contribute to interpatient and interdrug variation in responses to antihypertensive drug therapy. Classical studies have characterized single gene polymorphisms of drug metabolizing enzymes that are responsible for large interindividual differences in pharmacokinetic responses to several antihypertensive drugs. Progress is bei...
